National Safe Motherhood Day

The Government of India declared the National Safe Motherhood day on April 1, 2003. It was done at the request of the White Ribbon Alliance India. The government chose this day to commemorate the
birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Gandhiji. It is celebrated every year with an aim to raise awareness about adequate access to care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period along with a
focus on reducing maternal health anomalies. Every woman has a right to live and survive pregnancy and childbirth. This year’s theme is “Remain at home amid coronavirus, protect mother and infant”.

India remains one of the most high-risk places in the world to give birth, accounting for almost 12% of total maternal deaths worldwide. Annually, over 35,000 women die in India of maternal causes, despite
over 80% delivering in health facilities. Almost all these deaths are preventable, suggesting that quality of care needs attention at multiple levels. The vision of the campaign is an India where all women and
girls realize their right to quality health and wellbeing and to activate a people-led movement for reproductive, maternal and newborn healthcare and rights. With the evolution of time, more challenges
to safe motherhood have arisen, following which motherhood despite being one of the most significant chapters of women’s lives also becomes one of the darkest. The question of societal privileges becomes
very important and thus it becomes imperative to aid the needy in the scenario.

The concept of safe motherhood is being advocated by several feminists, human rights activists and various legal aid societies, identifying that the cause may also be deeply rooted in the policy frameworks
that can be encountered by filling in the loopholes, by inculcating dialogues about it openly and often. The blog shall endeavour to reflect upon the significance and various aspects of safe motherhood and
Legal Aid.
